Michael Howard’s landscape painting focuses on the the traces, echoes and presence of human activity that shape and define the hills and mountains that surround his home near Brecon in Powys.
His paintings reflect a point where observation, memory, experience and imagination converge. While they are topographically faithful, they are much more about his mood, the speed of gesture, the application of materials, colour selection, confident mark making and the ever present struggle to resolve visual issues, In short they are about pure painting.
Michael Howard lives and works just outside Brecon. Born in 1950, he has spent his whole life making and teaching art. He studied at Chelsea School of Art and his work has been exhibited widely, nationally and internationally.
