Here at Fyi:Brecon we've heard various pronunciations of 'Y Gaer', the recently announced name for Brecon's cultural centre and to date very few have been correct ie. standard. We've heard it pronounced 'Y Gare' (rhyming with care (this is very local dialect), 'Y Gear' (rhyming with fear) and other strange permutations. At the end of this article is a link to hearing it pronounced as it should be.
It's important that Y Gaer pronounced properly from the start as names stick - how many of us are still calling it The Hub? It's also important that the Welsh language is not Anglicised to become some sort of Wenglish that nobody really understands.
Y Gaer is pronounced to rhyme with the word 'biro' but without the 'o' at the end.
