Hugh Purcell will be talking about his forthcoming book ‘Up Top’ - 100 years of a Mental Hospital which is a history of how we have treated mental health over the last century with a focus on the Mid Wales Hospital at Talgarth. He has researched in Powys Archives, the National Archive in London and at the Wellcome Library. He has also interviewed many former staff at the Mid Wales Hospital. The book is still in progress but will be published next year.
Hugh Purcell is now a professional writer who lives at Llan-y-wern outside Brecon. He is the author of several historical biographies, details of which may be found on www.hughpurcell.co.uk. His main career was in broadcasting. He spent twenty-six years in the BBC producing television and radio documentaries before joining an independent company and teaching film worldwide. He was educated at Cambridge University and is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
He has a long interest in mental health having been married to a legal adviser to the criminally insane who became a Mental Health Commissioner.
The Friends support the work of Brecon and District Mind and raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. It is open to all and holds talks, activities and fund-raising events.
