A new art competition launches today for young people living in Wales. The Zulu 19 Art Competition is open to 9 to 18-year-olds and winning art works will be displayed and seen by King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu when he visits Brecon this July.
The theme of entries should reflect any aspect of Zulu culture and be comprised of any 2D media - including paint, pencil, crayon, collage, prints, embroidery, textiles and digital media. There are three age groups - 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 and the closing date for entries is Monday 3 June 2019.
Organiser Ann Reese says: "The Zulu 19 Art Competition has been established by the Friends of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh to celebrate and commemorate the visit by the Zulu king. This association between Zululand in South Africa and Wales commenced in the conflict of the Zulu War of 1879 but now endures because of friendship and mutual respect. The Zulus have a vibrant culture and a beautiful country which will provide the inspiration for your work."
Entries should be submitted as jpegs by email to be judged. Submissions must be received by Monday 3 June 2019. The actual artwork should be a maximum size of A2 (42 x 59cms). The winning entries will be chosen by judges South African theatre director Jerry Pooe, Dorcas Cresswell (Friends of the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum) and artists Karin Mear, Roger Reese and Robert MacDonald.
The winner of each age group will be awarded £100 of art materials. Second place runners up will receive £50 and third places will receive £25 with certificates awarded for Highly Commended entries.
How to Enter:
Entrants to send an image of your art work by email to zulu19artcomp@gmail.com – do not send the original at this stage. In the email, include your surname, first name, the title of your artwork, the media you chose and the dimensions of your piece, your date of birth, the nearest town to where you live and a contact telephone number but note that this should be a parent or guardian for those under age 16. By submitting your work to us, you are confirming that it is an original and unassisted piece produced by you; that you live in Wales; that you give permission for your work to be on public display and to be used in conjunction with the visit of King Zwelithini to Wales in July 2019.
There is plenty of material available on You Tube and the internet to inspire you. Alternatively, why not visit the Regimental museum and see Zulu artefacts for yourself?

The organisers reserve the right to cancel the competition if the number of applicants is judged to be too few to ensure that a viable competition can take place.
