The Welsh tradition of the Mari Lwyd has become a much loved regular feature of Brecon’s annual festivities and will be returning for a whole day of events around town for the Brecon Wassail on Saturday 18th January 2020.
The Mari Lwyd is an ancient folk custom that involves going from house to house – and especially from pub to pub – with an entourage playing music, singing songs and much mirthmaking!
On this occasion, the local Mari Lwyd will be joined by special guests Cwmni Gwerin Pontypwl Welsh Folk Dancers with Mari Afon Lwyd, Fflossi, Mari Lwyd Eirlys, in addition to Boekka, Morvargh and Penkevyll the Lands End Oss, who will be making a special visit from Cornwall.
Other Mari Lwyd from around Wales are also hoping to attend, and there will be another visit to Brecon from the legendary Darkest Ooser. Participants will be meeting up at Noon at the newly opened y Gaer for a traditional Welsh Pwnco ceremony, which will include music and dancing, before a procession through town, prior to the Wassail ceremony at Watton Canal Bank Community Orchard in the evening. This will be followed by an evening Pwnco with a night of Welsh music (Noson Llawen) and dancing by joining up with The Washboard Resonators and Bryony Sier at The Muse at 6PM followed by an afterparty from 10pm until Midnight.
