A new poetry trail marking the 75 th anniversary of VE Day has been unveiled at
Brecon’s Promenade.
The project has been funded by Brecon Town Council. It includes eight new
benches each featuring a line from a poem called “We Will Remember Them” which
was written by Year 6 Pupils at Llanfaes School, Brecon.
The scheme was put forward by local Councillor Matthew Dorrance who worked with
the Town Council to ensure the project helped the town mark the 75th anniversary of
VE Day and improve the Prom for the community.
Chair of the Environment and Events Committee Cllr Ieuan Williams said:
“When I received this request from Councillor Matthew Dorrance to seek the
Committees support for this project, I didn't hesitate in taking it forward.
“The town has missed out on a number of important Military occasions this year
amongst them the VE and VJ Day Celebrations and of course Remembrance
Sunday.
“This Poetry Trail will help to keep these very important dates in everyone's minds
whilst providing additional seating down at the Promenade.”
St John Ward Councillor Matthew Dorrance said:
“I’m grateful to Brecon Town Council who supported my idea and provided the
funding for this project.
“Through this poetry trail, we have been able to work with young people in Brecon to
create a lasting remembrance of the 75th anniversary of VE Day and provide much
needed seating for residents and visitors at the Prom.
“Over recent months we’ve all been reminded just how important our green spaces
and parks are so it’s great that Brecon Town Council is investing in them for the
future.”
Karen Lawrence, Headteacher at Llanfaes CP School said:
"We are thrilled to have participated and won this competition. Remembering those
who gave so much so that our children's futures are secured is incredibly important.
To have our children's work engraved on the bench as a lasting memorial as part of
the town's VE commemorations is an honour and a privilege."

We Will Remember Them
75 Years have passed since many heroes have come and gone
As the sun shone down on the poppies that grow from the forgotten field
of wonder
The poppies whisper like water flowing, red representing the blood that
they shed
Many candles have lost their light as the black silhouettes never arrived
home
Some shine bright for evermore but their memories live on and on
May 8th 1945 the day to remember celebration and Victory
The sound of voices, the sound of music, the sound of multiple emotions
Our heroes welcome a solidarity salute, never forgotten, we will remember
