Ex -Cabinet member for Powys highways ,Liam Fitzpatrick , today said ,
" I am extremely grateful to all members of the public and the incredible Highways staff for their amazing work over the last three months in keeping people safe in our communities and the many hours they have put in. This has been substantiated by hundreds of emails that have been forwarded to me in thanks . which I have passed on to the many men and extraordinary women involved .
I learned to day that I no longer have a place in the Cabinet and have been inundated with emails from councillors, community councillors and the general Public expressing their thanks and concerns . Perhaps I stood up for the little guy too much , perhaps I spoke too much for the amazing Highways crew, the people who don't get a lot for their Council tax these days . Perhaps I said too much that our street scene in Powys matters - our bins collected , our streets swept , our beautiful landscape kept clean- we dont want to live in a dirty Beacons !
On a factual point of information - Perhaps the Leader of the Cabinet could have called me once over the last three months to ask what Highways were doing when we were dealing with three Snow crises and peoples lives were at risk, 500 men on the road 24 hours - and we had spent in excess of 500k in extra aid from farmers and contractors to keep people safe .
I regret nothing . I feel I have been fair and done my duty , regardless of the cost in keeping people in the County Safe and I would sincerely hope that people will continue to hold Highways staff in the same regard that I will continue to do so .
I thank you for your incredible help across our community and hope I have done my bit. "
