Sustainability, conservation and local heritage will be celebrated at Brecon Cathedral’s first Convivium Festival, which is taking place this summer.
The event, on June 23, will feature live music with the help and support of local music impresarios Nigel Evans and Brecon Music’s Angus Kings, a heritage walk and a taste of America – inspired by US-born festival founder Canon Mark Clavier – with a Southern-style barbecue.
The festival begins with a guided walk from the Cathedral, taking in local heritage sites and countryside. This will be followed by a talk in the Cathedral by Nick Hunt, author of Walking the Woods and the Water and Where the Wild Winds Are. Nick will speak about his journeys on foot from the Pennines to Provence, the Alps to the Dalmatian coast and what he learned about the connections between wind, spirit and soul.
The barbecue will begin in the mid-afternoon with pulled pork, a choice of homemade Carolina barbecue sauces, and all the traditional Southern side dishes. There’ll be veggie options too. There will be kids activities and guided tours of the Cathedral and tower.
The day ends with live music by Hatful of Rain, a British contemporary folk group that combines powerful song writing with musical flare, inspired by English, Celtic and American Roots styles.
Mark said: “Convivium is striking a chord with a lot of people. I think this is because it taps into concerns about the environment and the loss of heritage. People don’t often connect the two things together but their intimately intertwined as the Brecon Beacon National Park demonstrates. The Cathedral is perfectly located to bring people together to think hard about and promote a vision for social flourishing that nurtures the natural environment and heritage. That’s what we’re hoping to achieve in the coming years. We think this could be the start of something big.”
Charities and other organisations will share information about sustainability, conservation, and supporting local communities and their heritage.
