On Friday November 23rd, I visited the War Memorial Hospital in Brecon. I was welcomed by Elaine Scott the nurse manager for Epynt Ward, Sue Pearce the Integrated Clinical Team Manager for Brecon & Bronllys and Anita Davies the Head of Nursing for South Powys.
They took me on a guided tour, starting at Y Bannau Ward and then to Epynt Ward where I met Neuro Physiotherapist Rosie Jones to discuss her role in the Hospital and across Powys. We then visited the Theatre area with Theatre Manager Phil Hobbs before lunch where we were also joined by Outpatient Sister Judith Jamieson.
I was then taken to the Outpatient Department where we met audiologist Sarah Boaler in the Audiology Room and then met ophthalmologist Faris Arif and optometrist Peter Hong to discuss the local Wet AMD service. I then met optometrist Vicky Baker as well as outpatient nurse Parbati Shrestha.
I also met with other members of staff such as Lise Chesters, Melanie Eckley, Carly Pook, and the clinical lead for the Wet AMD service Mr George Morphis to discuss the issues faced at the hospital and the amazing services they provide.
This really was an eye opening experience and as a Royal College of Nursing, Nursing Champion, it was heart warming to see the work done on the ground by the fantastic staff of Powys Teaching Health Board!
