Celebrating Friendship
Brecon welcomed over 200 Nepalese people to the town on Sunday 9th June to celebrate the Twinning of Brecon and Dhampus earlier in the year.
The event hosted by Brecon Town Council and the Brecon/Dhampus Twinning Association took place in the grounds of the Castle Hotel after the annual Gurkha Parade.
The afternoon began with a Guard of Honour by members of the Gurkha Wing Mandalay together with a bagpiper who escorted invited dignitaries and their guests to the stage for the Opening Ceremony where gifts were exchanged between Brecon and Dhampus. Cllr David Meredith, Chair of the Brecon/ Dhampus Twinning Association welcomed everyone and said:” We were treated like royalty in Dhampus last February and now it’s our turn to show how much we value our friendship”.
Cllr Ann Mathias, Mayor of Brecon presented a plaque to Gethin Davies (see Photo at top of article), the youngest Welshman to climb Everest. Gethin is a serving officer in the Infantry Battle School at Dering Lines and had only just returned from his successful climb.
The crowd was entertained by Nepalese dancing and local Welsh talent. Christ College Senior Wind Band were the first to perform followed by Brecon High School pupil Carwyn Whomsley and Cor Meibion
Brecon Brewing provided a special ale for the event, Dhampus Delight, and Casa and Paddy Sweeney Butchers provided the food. Llanfaes Dairy were also present.
Three Nepalese Charities the Brick School, WSDO Pokhara-Fair Trade in Nepal and Kidasha had a stall to inform guests of their charity work in Nepal.
Cllr Ann Mathias commented at the end of proceedings “It’s been a great day to further strengthen our friendship. A lot of work has gone into organising this celebration and I’d like to thank everyone for their support”.
